Driving safely involves more than just knowing the rules of the road. One of the fundamental aspects of safe driving is maintaining the correct position of your hands on the steering wheel. Here’s a guide to help you understand the correct steering wheel position:
1. The ‘9 and 3’ Position
Traditionally, driving instructors have recommended the ‘10 and 2’ position (imagine a clock face on your steering wheel). However, with the advent of airbags and changes in steering system designs, the ‘9 and 3’ position is now widely recommended. Place your left hand on the left portion of the steering wheel in a location approximate to where the nine would be if the wheel was a clock. Your right hand should be placed on the right portion of the wheel where the three would be.
2. Hand-over-Hand Steering
For making turns, the hand-over-hand steering technique is often taught. Starting from the ‘9 and 3’ position, one hand pulls the wheel over to the opposite side, while the other hand crosses over to continue the motion.
3. Push-Pull Steering
Another method for turning is the push-pull technique. In this method, one hand pushes the wheel up, while the other hand slides down and pulls the wheel over.
4. Keeping Your Hands on the Wheel
It’s important to keep both hands on the wheel at all times, except when shifting gears or operating car controls like the windshield wipers or turn signals. Even then, return your hands to the correct position as quickly as possible.
5. Relaxed but Firm Grip
Your grip on the steering wheel should be firm but relaxed. A tight grip can cause fatigue, while a loose grip might not give you the control you need.
Remember, maintaining the correct steering wheel position is crucial for controlling your vehicle effectively and responding quickly to situations. Practice these techniques to ensure you’re steering safely and confidently.
